Top Holiday Gift Ideas

November 20, 2009

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, everyone is preparing for the launch of the Holiday Season. Whether it be dusting off the roasting pan, looking for the turkey baster, planning your table settings, or getting a head start on gifts, there is work to be done. Luckily, Macy's is having a sale on everything you need for the perfect holiday.

Shop Macy's this weekend and get 5.0% Cash Back (increased for our November Holiday Double Cash Back month) and save 20-50% off plus everyday values with free shipping on orders of $99 or more with code READY at checkout. Save on bed & bath items, holiday decor, kitchen, luggage, entertaining, clothing, and accessories for the whole family. I clicked over to the Macy's homepage to shop for much needed home entertaining items (my guests need napkins other than paper towels) and was enamored by their spectacular holiday gift guide. With helpful categories like gifts under $25 and gifts for him, it is easy to find the right gift at the right price while you pick up some necessary holiday items this weekend at Macy's.

Mac Do The Trick Brush Collection at Macys
While clicking through the categories, I found this special edition MAC Do The Trick Brush Set for $49.50 with 5.0% Cash Back. MAC makes the best brushes on the planet and every year during the holidays they release a special value, limited edition gift set. Since a beauty obsession runs in the family, I will pick up this set for my mom's stocking and earn some cash back for myself!

Helmut Lang Mercury VestAddictions are like candy. They're fun in the beginning but the aftermath is always a let down. Take my addiction to Shopbop for example. It's true, browsing this site on a daily basis is a pleasurable experience, but the outcome of temptation is spending money which either 1) I don't have or 2) should be spent on holiday gifts. Saving my behind (and the feelings of friends/family) are new markdowns at Shopbop. Now I'm able to stock up on a few wardrobe enhancing items while keeping my money situation in the black. 6% Cash Back in the black to be exact.

My love for Helmut Lang is much like my love for strong coffee: never fleeting, sometimes irrational, and always rewarding. The above Helmut Lang Mercury Drape Vest is an example of this love. Since early Summer I have been price stalking this garment, and what was an unaffordable $360 is now an eye catching $108. That's a savings of $252! As an added bonus this Splendid Merino Side Tee is also on sale. A combination of wool and jersey, this top is casual but can easily be dressed up with the right accessories. Only $56, it's just another example of the big savings going on at Shopbop!

One of my many inexplicable obsessions is watching weather reports and visiting weather forecast sites. I truly love to know what is in the forecast, even if it is inaccurate 90% of the time. Here in San Francisco, there is a huge storm brewing off the coast and expected to hit the city on Friday with high winds and lots of rain. Anyone not from California would consider this a pretty wimpy storm but here, since big ones are rare we get excited about the slightest weather disturbance. Regardless, all the talk of the storm (and SF's wet winter beginning) had me thinking about my rain gear, a matter that is on the minds of many this time of year.

Because nothing is worse that ruining a pair of shoes (except maybe having soaked feet), the most crucial item is a good pair of rain boots. Hunter Rain Boots With Overnight Shipping From EndlessMy pick is the original (and the best) Hunter Tall Rain Boots. Available in a variety of colors and with sold-separately fleece lined "socks", these boots will keep you dry in rain, sludge and whatever else crosses your path. I have been on the hunt for the boots in navy, as they are sold out on many shoe sites. Luckily I found them in my size at Endless, with 6.0% Cash Back and free overnight shipping, so I will have them on my feet just in time for the big storm!

Shop our Clothing category! The transition from Fall to Winter is a bit of a fashion dilemma. By mid November you've grown tired of what you craved in September, and those adorable flats? Unpractical below 50 degrees. Before holiday fashions like sparkly tops, party dresses, and embellished everything takes center stage, here a just a few pieces I'll be using to spice up my wardrobe. Hey - gift giving isn't just for others!

Intarsia CardiganOf course the biggest fashion concern is how do I stay warm while looking current? Well drapey sweaters like this Intarsia Cardigan make that a cinch. Not only is it on point with this season's loose, Sunday attire fashion, it's also just $68 at Urban Outfitters (2.5% Cash Back).

Camilla Waist BagErykah Badu has a song titled Bag Lady, which of course is a metaphor for women with baggage, yet I can't help but think she's on to something. Carrying everything but the kitchen sink is sooo 2008, so to give my shoulders a rest I bought this Camilla Waist Bag by Felix Rey from Shopbop (6.0% Cash Back).

Gwenevere Skinny Ankle JeansAlso from Shopbop are these 7 For All Mankind Jeans. Perfect for tucking into a pair of Frye Maxine Boots from Endless (6.0% Cash Back), or worn alone with classic sneakers like Chuck Taylors. The dark color of these jeans gives them a sophisticated look, but thanks to a forgivable amount of stretch, they are also incredibly comfortable. Ideal for holiday parties with lots of treats!

With Thanksgiving a little over a week away, my thoughts have drifted from thinking of the holiday joy shared with loved ones to pondering what I am going to wear for the occasion. I am spending the holiday with friends and their dinner is a little more formal than I am used to. I need something comfortable, festive, and pulled together but I want to buy things I can definitely wear again that will work into my everyday wardrobe. The perfect place to start for a holiday dinner look is at JCrew where I will get 1.5% Cash Back when I shop through Ebates.

Felted Wool Bistro MiniNothing says 'tis the season like a perfect skirt: it's feminine, polished, and easy to accessorize depending on the occasion. This Felted Wool Mini is ideal because I can dress it up or wear it casually and looks perfect paired with tights and with virtually any shoe (from short motorcycle boots to a feminine pump).

Cotton Check Shirt

I will layer it with something unexpected (but still something that I will wear a hundred times) like this menswear-inspired Cotton Check Shirt for a little edge and an added layer of warmth.

Merino Rose Corsage Sweater

I'll top it off with a warm and cozy sweater like this Mernio Rose Corsage Sweater  which has just the right amount of detail without being over the top. Now I can add fun and festive touches like a crystal encrusted bracelet and this fun sparkly belt.

This look will work for your holiday dinner too! Check out JCrew coupons and get 1.5% Cash Back when you shop for your perfect holiday outfit!

Apple iTunes CouponsI know we've written about this in the past, but I feel like every now and again it's worth mentioning one more time: you can earn 3.0% Cash Back through Ebates when you purchase items from the iTunes store. This includes everything from music and movies to iPhone apps. Granted, you do have to click through an Ebates link, and use your computer rather than your mobile device, but wouldn't you do that if you knew you'd be getting cash back on everything you buy?

Take it from a guy who has an iPhone, two iPods, and about sixty days worth of music in his iTunes account: you can really rack up some cash on these downloads, especially if you are the type who finds it easier to rent or download a movie or TV episode via iTunes rather than catch it the first time through. Also, don't forget that many popular bands also have iTunes-only releases which are usually both inexpensive and filled with little gems like live performances or B-side recordings.

What makes this almost more impressive of a deal is that Ebates offers 1.0% Cash Back from the Apple Store, but 3.0% Cash Back on iTunes purchases - so despite the fact that you don't have anything physical to show for it, you are getting a better deal on cash back when shopping for music and more at the iTunes Store.

What will you find in the Ebates Music & Movies category?

I'll be frank, when it comes to buying gifts, I'm all about saving money. Makes sense since I have nearly a dozen people to shop for. Helping ease my financial woes is Kohls. Not only are they part of Ebates November Double Cash Back, but they feature a Holiday Gift Shop dedicated to gifts neatly categorized from over $100 to under $25. The following are just a few of my favorite picks arranged, of course, by price point.

Martha Stewart Baking HandbookGifts Under $100
What do parents need or want that they can't buy themselves? The answer is nothing, so instead of buying things they'll use, go to plan b and buy them things they like. My dad loves the New England Patriots (and anything fleece) and my mom likes (read: is addicted to) cookbooks. The answer? One New England Patriots Fleece Jacket and one Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook. Both come out to $100, and both are just what they would want.

George Foreman GrillGifts Under $50
What could be better for the college student (like my brothers) sick of popcorn chicken than a George Foreman Grill? This one is just $33.99 and it's a fast and safe way for my siblings to cook something that isn't fried and doesn't require a microwave.

Plush Pajama PantsGifts Under $25
A teenagers love for pajama bottoms never ceases to amaze me. What is it that makes wearing pajama bottoms with reindeer or teddy bears cool? Answering this is like finding the meaning of life, so rather than scratch my head I found these Plush Pajama Pants for just $12.99. At such an affordable price I can buy my little sister a few pairs and supply her with nearly a week's worth of clothing.

I have already professed my love for HSN. Likewise, I have a special place in my heart for designer collaborations. So when a designer collaboration comes to HSN, I am nothing short of overjoyed. The great thing about designer collaborations is that you are getting the designer's aesthetic at a more affordable price and it is often in limited quantities, so it makes the collection feel special.

The newest designer collaboration down the pike is with acclaimed designers Mark Badgely and James Mischka (of Badgely Mischka) who will officially launch their American Glamour Collection on HSN November 17th (at 9pm EST), but it is available online now and you will get 6.0% Cash Back (that's doubled for November). The collection boasts classic feminine glamorous designs with items like jewel encrusted cuffs, silk tunics, and snakeskin embossed American Glamour Badgely Mishchka Cuffsatchels. I am in love with this Hinged Cuff Bracelet, which is honestly the perfect accoutrement to all my holiday looks and will make even the most boring outfits feel festive. Plus, its just $99 and I can may payments as low as $33, so I won't have to tap into my Christmas gift budget.

Shop now for special discounted prices, get double cash back, and tune in to watch the designers!

November 14, 2009

To quote one of my dearest friends, "You need a good pair of jeans, killer pair of heels, and a great bag. The rest is frivolous." Because tops, blouses, and sweaters are easily replaceable (unlike a great fitting pair of jeans) I see no reason to spend a ton of money on them. Urban Outfitters doesn't see a reason to charge a ton, and thanks to them I'm able to stock up on this season's trendiest tops for less. Before you overspend on designer labels, check out Urban Outfitters for 2.5% Cash Back and free standard shipping on orders over $150.

Kimchi Striped SweaterColder mornings mean warmer clothing, and this Kimchi Striped Top is a non frumpy way to keep toasty. If you can believe it, this sweater is only $42. Nautical stripes lend this a french look commonly seen in one of my favorite style blogs The Sartorialist. What To Wear It With: Your favorite trench coat, leggings, and motorcycle boots for a very Parisian look.

Geren Ford Ruffle TopSpeaking of Parisian, this Ruffle Top from Hawks by Geren Ford (the same Geren Ford who's full priced tops sell for around $250) looks as if it were made for Marion Cotillard. Just the thing I need for upcoming holiday parties or a first date, this sweet top is an affordable $68. What To Wear It With: Pearl earrings, suede ankle booties, and you're frilliest of skirts.

Webbed Tunic SweaterOne trend I love this season is actually a mish-mash of trends. Pieces that combine rock and roll and eclectic artsy like this Webbed Tunic Sweater can be seen in fashion blogs like WhoWhatWear, and Le Fashion. What To Wear It With: Complete the distressed look with cut up denim, fringed scarf, and an oversized bag.

Over the weekend, I had a bit of a cold and was resting it out in bed. The idle time gave me a chance to take part in one of my favorite time consuming activities: searching the Environmental Working Group's Cosmetics Database "Skin Deep". The database is a safety guide which rates cosmetic, baby, and personal care products based on their potentially harmful ingredients. You can search the database by an individual product, product type or brand. I searched one of my favorite Health and Beauty destinations, The Body Shop and found that they have many products with a low hazard rating, which was great news for me. Even better news was that The Body Shop is a member of our exciting November Double Cash Back month and has a staggering 10.0% Cash Back with coupons galore.

Shea Body Butter With 10.0% Cash Back
Shop now and get free shipping on orders of $50 or more and shop for bath and body favorites that are buy one get one 50% off. I recently ended a seemingly futile search for something to save my dry skin. The only solution seems to be a highly moisturizing body treatment like The Body Shop's Shea Body Butter for $20. If I buy the Body Butter, I can get a Shea Body Scrub for 50% off, making it just $10. Nothing keeps Winter skin in tip-top shape like regular exfoliation and daily moisturizing.

I will pick up a few stocking stuffers to qualify for free shipping and take advantage of shopping with 10.0% Cash Back!

free shipping coupons
Wow, I'm surprised that so many people are so superstitious. Yes, today is Friday the 13th, which somewhere along the line became an ill-fated day full of bad omens and worse luck. Still, as I sit here examining today's free shipping offerings, I notice a surprising void: not one single merchant seems willing to end their free shipping deals on Friday the 13th. Literally, I look at the list and see plenty of coupons ending on the 14th, and I saw some ending on the 12th yesterday, but apparently offering a final day of free shipping on the 13th is just taboo. Here at Ebates, we are fearless when it comes to bringing you cash back, so bring on the black cats and ladders - we'll keep on helping you save!

Here is the rest of the week's deals:

Ladies and gents, every now and then a great sale just falls in your lap. For once, rather than scouting around Ebates for a sale, I had one practically come knock on my front door. See, my friends know me to be an appreciator of fine cinema, and as I own a handful of Criterion Collection edition DVDs of my favorite flicks, they took it upon themselves to keep me in the know -- Barnes & Noble.com is currently offering 50% off all Criterion Collection DVDs or Blu-Ray Discs. So this is your chance to snatch up copies of such classic films as "Brazil", or "Two Lane Blacktop", or Fellini's "8 1/2". So, in other words, these aren't your Disney classics or Jerry Bruckheimer blockbusters. The good news is that most of these movies are hard if not impossible to find otherwise, and you can get all the cool additional features that come with the Criterion Collection without the somewhat inflated Criterion Collection price tag.

Two-Lane BlacktopSo whether you are a film geek (like yours truly) or just know one who is hard to find Christmas presents for, this is a great chance to really make that movie collection of your shine with a little bit of extra independent cred. So if, like me, you get a thrill out of the idea of seeing a weary knight play chess against the grim reaper in Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal", you will be thrilled to know that you can get the Criterion Collection edition DVD from Barnes & Noble.com for just $14.99, plus 4.0% Cash Back.

Pop up some popcorn and find your movie of choice with some great cash back in our Music & Movies category!

Shop Designer Furniture at Sears! It's been stated before that I am a design nut. A blog reading, window shopping, Google image seeking design nut. It's also been stated that one of my favorite design blogs is Desire To Inspire. During my latest visit to this site I came across a growing trend in design; plastic furniture. Before you think of tacky patio chairs, cafeteria seating, or anything meant for children, take a look at how Kim (one of DTI founders and design extraordinaire) manages to use them in ways that are modern and really fun. Expecting hefty price tags? Not when you shop at Sears. Thanks to Ebates November Double Cash Back you'll get 4.0% Cash Back at Sears and find modern furnishings (like the chair above) by Baxton Studio.

Baxton Studio ChairsThese Accent Chairs feature the same smooth shape and retro design as the above chair,  but this set of two costs under $200 at Sears. One chair alone at an overpriced retailer could cost up to $800, so you know these chairs are not just a funky addition to your home, but a great deal as well. Besides plastic chairs, Baxton Studio also makes acrylic furniture (a favorite of mine) as well as comfy sofas and modern tables. With over two hundred pieces to choose from, it's possible for all design nuts to find something they love while spending less.

When it comes to shopping for Holiday gifts, I often do the majority of my shopping for gifts at Sephora. This year, with their participation in our November Double Cash Back month, I have even more incentive to do my holiday shopping there. Offering 8.0% Cash Back and a ton of free gift and shipping coupons, Sephora through Ebates is the place to be this year. With best-selling gifts from last year, like this Scent Sampler (with more varieties) back for another season and new gift collections in skincare, makeup, and fragrance from virtually every beauty brand Sephora carries, there is literally something for everyone at Sephora with increased cash back.
My First Makeup Kit Deluxe Sampler With 8.0% Cash Back.jpg
Even better than having a gift for every recipient on your list, Sephora has made the process a cinch with a new and improved gift guide: shop by personality (The Luxe Girl, The Natural Beauty, Men's, and more), gift type (stocking stuffer, corporate gifts, gift card) and price (with ranges from $25 and under to $50 and over). One of the irresistible new additions to the gift set arsenal is this My First Makeup Kit Deluxe Sampler, an $89 value and just $32. While this is a great kit for someone new to makeup, it is also suitable for virtually anyone looking for the perfect travel-size beauty kit to keep you looking gorgeous.

Get 8.0% Cash Back at Sephora on gifts, gadgets, and more! Want more cash back? Shop all twenty of our November Double Stores.

If it seems like I'm writing about sales a lot, that's because I am. But the reason I am is that currently some of our favorite merchants are running some great sales. Add to the list of great sales this beauty from Bloomingdale's: with coupon code BFRIEND, you can take 20% off all purchases at Bloomingdale's through this Sunday, November 15th.

Batman ScarfWhat's nice about site-wide sales is that you can really make your discounts work for you much more than on specific item-based sales or department-wide sales. This way you can take advantage of discounted prices, a great 20% off sale, and 5% Cash Back through Ebates. It's a great opportunity to get a jump start on your holiday shopping, because I wouldn't trust that some of the hotter and more in-demand products will make it through the sale, so if you're thinking you want to wait until Black Friday, you might want to think again.

So what's Bill asking for this Christmas? This cashmere Batman scarf. It's a perfect blend of high class (we're talking 100% cashmere here, folks) and low culture (I have a Batman tattoo and a Batman pocket watch, I might as well get a scarf to round out the set). Plus, it's made by a company called Psycho Bunny. Who can't get behind that? Let's not forget that by applying the Bloomingdale's coupon code to this purchase, I'll knock off $45, taking the price to a much more manageable $180.

What will you find in the Bloomingdale's Friends and Family Sale?

Shop The Latest Trends at Macys!By now you know all about Ebates November Double Cash Back. Twenty stores that are increasing, doubling, or even more than doubling their cash back amounts during the month of November. Personally, I've already started shopping for the holidays. Maybe it's not for others, but hey, the season of giving doesn't just apply to others right? Right. With that being said there's no better place to shop for gifts than Macys. During the month of November you'll get 5.0% Cash Back at Macys (up from 3.0%) and find plenty of money saving coupons.

Astrid BootOne of the hottest trends in footwear this season is boots with lots of hardware. Buckles, studs, straps; you name it, it's out there. The above photo is from one of my favorite blogs WhoWhatWear and it shows just how many options there are when it comes to this trend. These Astrid Ankle Boots are as sleek as the above options, but at just $149, these are definitely less expensive. Besides all the right details, these boots also have a low heel, making them easy to walk in. Perfect with skinny jeans and a loose sweater, I'll be on trend without the spend!
