Here at Ebates we are getting geared up for Christmas, and I can speak at least for the male half of the blog team when I say that one of the things we get most excited about this time of year (in addition to all the great sales and promotions) is toys. So last week when I wrote about GoGoods.com, I let you in a bit on my protocol for the selection of sites to be featured in this segment. This week, I just have to mention this site because I find it mildly ridiculous, but it might appeal to some of you folks with smaller children. I fully acknowledge that being a completely unattached and childless male in my late twenties, I tend to roll my eyes at sentimental child-centric products, but this one might just go another step.

As is evident from even the most cursory glance at MyTwinn.com, they make dolls to exact specifications to resemble your daughter, hence the "twin" part of the site. I will say, I can kind of understand this. It would definitely make a lasting memory for both children and parents for years to come. Their process is really quite precise, and they even request a picture of your child to make sure that the doll's look is as close as possible to the real-life child. I applaud them for that, and I think in that area of their business, they do a very good job. They also do a good job of keeping the price down - each of these are hand-crafted customized dolls with specific skin tones and an array of hair colors that cost about $150.

Here is where I have issues: they sell matching clothes. They have crossed the border from "find doll clothes to put on the doll that resemble your child's clothes" to the bizarre territory of "buy clothes for your child to match her doll's clothes. Yes, it makes for a great photo op, and it is a great way to offer a chance for return shoppers to come back and update the look, at least as far as clothing is concerned.

So, whether you love them or you hate them, give it a look. If like me, you roll your eyes at this site, go through and have a laugh. Or, if you have the sentimentality that I lack, take a gander - it looks like a good quality product for the price you pay, and you do get 4% cash back on any and all products purchased from them, whether it be a doll or a matching outfit.

It was the most convenient for him and it was in “manly” colors so he never felt uncomfortable carrying it around. It also had insulated pockets for milk, snacks, etc. so he never had to carry anything extra baggage around. 

Larry: Any backpack will work. 

Bryan: I really like backpacks. Victorinox is a brand of backpacks that I think are nice but if you like the messenger type I would look at Timbuck2 or Define.  A diaper bag for a man usually doesn’t have to hold as much as what, say, my wife would use.

I personally think a changing table is a waste of money because it only lasts a couple of years and then it just turns into an ugly piece of furniture. The positive is it’s a lifesaver on your back. My solution? Purchase a nice dresser and create your own changing table! Find one that’s long enough to hold a changing pad and a basket with diapers, wipes and toiletries on the end. If you have a son and run into “accidental squirts”, it’ll be a breeze to clean up (as opposed to changing the baby on the bed and having to wash sheets, etc.). Now that my son doesn’t need a changing station anymore, I put frames and his books on the top of the dresser.

The only advantages that the larger size has is that it can “convert” into a changing table or “play yard”, but in reality once you get this thing set up and put together you’re not gonna want to rearrange it again (very hard to put it together, and not very clear instructions!). The benefit of a co-sleeper is that your baby is right there next to you in bed, making late night feedings much easier (not to mention being more easily able to calm fussiness and give her a pacifier). Our Design Director, Sam, has this suggestion for Hollie: 

I don’t think my wife used any kind of special yoga equipment during her pregnancy (but she did continue to do yoga even up to the day she went into labor!). The one special piece of exercise equipment we did get was an exercise ball (sometimes called a birth ball). This item actually proved invaluable to us – you can use it for pregnancy exercises, and for labor training (for actual labor too). The ball really came in handy for us though, after our daughter was born – holding her while “bouncing” on the ball was the ONLY sure method of calming her down and stopping her crying during the first month. Worked every time – and still mostly does today after 3 months.

I am having issues not being able to sleep on my back anymore since I have been pregnant, as that is the way I always would sleep before.  Did anyone use a pregnancy wedge or body pillow to help ease sleeping problems during pregnancy?  Did it help?  What was better, the wedge or the pillow?  How did your spouse, boys this is your turn to put your two cents in, adjust to this?  I know that some pillows are huge, like the size of another person, was that bothersome for your significant other?

Anna (Product Manager): The pregnancy wedge is the way to go! I used it to comfortably support my belly while lying on my left side (best position for the baby). My husband would then stuff pillows behind me and basically tuck me in every night, because I too am a back sleeper and would often roll onto my back at night. With our “technique”, I basically couldn’t move so it was the perfect solution!

Wilma (Engineer): No, I did not use any body pillow to sleep on my side. If I used one at all, I used a regular standard sized pillow.

Ray (Director of Operations): You need a queen sized bed or bigger for this, though the pillow does help quite a bit, and it's not especially in the way if the bed is big enough.

Sam (Design Director):My wife used something called the “Snoogle”, and she loved it! The Snoogle extends to the length of the body from a “coil” – you can also use it in several different positions as well. Towards the end of her pregnancy my wife had to augment the Snoogle with a normal pillow under the belly, and this set-up seemed to work pretty well. I must admit I was a little jealous of the Snoogle at first, but then I got used to its presence, and I actually hi-jacked it a few times 'cuz it’s very comfy!

Has anyone ever seen or used a pregnancy journal for both the mom-to-be and the dad-to-be to do together? You cant go to any bookstore or pregnancy store without finding a gazillion for moms-to-be, but nearly none for the dads-to-be. I would love for my husband to be able to be more involved with the pregnancy, and everything that is going on with me and the bambino, any suggestions? Has anyone heard of a pregnancy journal for parents-to-be?

Larry (Engineer): My wife had a week-by-week development book,  (i.e. in Week x the heart starts beating.)  It was very neat, but it wasn't precisely a journal or calendar.

Sam (Design Director): We never used an interactive pregnancy journal or calendar (although I think this idea sounds pretty cool).

Wilma (Engineer): I would just use a normal journal for this and keep a log of your thoughts and feeling when you   were pregnant. For example, when did you feel the first flutter, kicks, etc..

Cath (V.P. of Finance): Don't know; I did not use one during my first pregnancy.

Anna (Product Manager): My sister bought me a journal as soon as she found out I was pregnant. I think she bought it at Papyrus, but you can get one at any baby or book store. It wasn’t for us as a couple, but more for Mom to track all her thoughts and emotions. It’s definitely a good investment! I can look back on my pregnancy experience and relive every joyful moment of it…or at least the parts I wrote down!

I keep reading about prenatal listeners, the small recorders that allow you to listen to your baby's heartbeat, kicking and even hiccups! It sounds pretty cool, but I'm not sure if it's worth the the $19.99. Would headphones do the same thing?

Larry (Engineer): Never used them. How about a stethoscope?

Wilma (Engineer): Yes, I used one of those prenatal heartbeat listeners and a headphone for my 2nd pregnancy. I even used a Dr.'s stethoscope to listen to the baby's heartbeat. Don't bother buying it as it's a waste of money. You can hardly hear anything and you really need to be in quiet place, no distractions, etc. to hear anything. If you want really want to record your baby's heartbeat, bring a tape recorder to every prenatal appt.

Anna (Product Manager): Yes, we bought one (suckers!) and for us, it was a waste of money. I had friends who it worked for (same exact listener), but we couldn't really distinguish the baby's sounds from mom's indigestion! It would probably have been more effective later in the pregnancy, but by that time, we had given up using it!

Sam (Design Director):We didn't use a listener (again, I didn't even know they existed). It WAS a lot of fun to hear the heartbeat during visits to the doctor though.

Cath (V.P. of Finance): I did and I love mine, especially with the first pregnancy when everything was so new. Listening to my baby's heartbeat whenever I wanted to was super important to me and my husband! :-) Headphones would not work!

A few weeks ago, I posted about a condition now known  as "Wii Elbow". Gamers more accustomed to lazing on the couch were a little surprised by the exertion (seemingly) required to play a game of Wii Sports. As a new mom, you don’t need all the bells and whistles… just the necessities. Stick with the basics and you’ll get through the first few months with some of your sanity left.

 A Crib – Whether its brand new or a hand-me-down, make sure it adheres to current safety standards.

Waterproof Mattress Pads – Your baby is bound to have a leaky diaper or two (or twelve) so make sure your mattress is protected! Have a couple pads handy for quick changes in the middle of the night.

Well-fitting Crib Sheets – Use sheets made specifically for cribs and make sure they fit tightly and securely around the mattress. Buy a few sheets in case you need to switch them out in a hurry.

Changing Pad with safety strap – No need to spend hundreds of dollars on a changing table, use a changing pad and the top of a dresser to create your own!       

Diaper Pail – Try a simple version that lets you use your own plastic bags. You won’t have to buy refills and you can put recycled plastic grocery bags to good use.

Plastic Bathtub – If you have a large kitchen sink, look for a tub that fits inside. It sounds odd, but your back will thank you later.

Stroller Travel System – Save money on the stroller, car seat and car seat base by purchasing them as a set. Just attach the car seat to the stroller and you’ll never have to wake the sleeping baby.
