At Long Last: Thank you eBay!

If there is one sort of cultural fetish object I can't resist for the life of me, it's a typewriter. I know, I know: they're old, they're unreliable, they call for needless upkeep, and they were rendered obsolete back before I was even born. Still, I have some memories of being a youngster and getting to use my parents' electric typewriter to write stories - apparently I had dreams of being a writer even as a youngster.

As I've grown older, my love for typewriters has only grown. I love the idea of really taking your time and making keystrokes that matter, of not being able to manipulate text like we do on the computer: with a typewriter there is a sense of purpose, a sense of permanence. Plus, of course, there is the memory that so many of our great writers slaved away at typewriters honing their craft. Plus, remember, I'm not getting rid of my computer to buy a typewriter. But man, I couldn't be more excited. After some weeks of quietly watching and looking, waiting for a functional vintage typewriter to show up, I finally pulled the trigger, winning this beauty of an Underwood. It's the old school manual typewriter I've always wanted, complete with latching suitcase-style carrying case and enough ribbon to keep me going for the time being.
